There seems to be two types of freestyle dancing (names created for simplicity they may be a bit inaccurate):
o Modern freestyle characterized by changing rhythms and unusual music. People at the Santa Cruz dance seem to prefer this style.
o Contemporary freestyle characterized by fairly consistent rhythms
Many of the people at the Radical Suburban Boogie are energy workers of some sort. Then all love that connection with spirit that seems to come with a rush of energy. Certain music makes that connection happen and the resultant energy allows us to dance all night. Enchanting and stirring music like Desert Rose by Sting and State of Independence by Donna Summer support this connection and stimulate the flow of energy. Like most people, we don't always like a good piece of music the first time it hear it. So familiar music has a better chance of stiring our evergy.

I prefer music with little to no words at least not in English. If there are words, I would like them to paint pretty pictures in my mind or inspire me or support love. Other things I like: World music, things that don't sound always all electronic, longer tracks, variety as much as possible.

Drama - it seems to me that when the tempo is brought down a little and then built back up people get stirred up. Songs that have changes in tempo or beat can do this too.
Tribal - music with rhythms from different native traditions really seems to send people.
Chaos - can't play it all the time, but capping off a build in drama with a song that has a hard driving beat as a base with a weave of other rhythms over it can sure wind me up!

I really like variation. I like to be worked into a frenzy and let to rest some in between the really intense songs. I prefer songs to connect to each other by a magical synchronicity rather than a similar or exact tempo... as in the same rhythm... song after song just like the one before gets really uninspiring...it is too repetitive... predictable...it all becomes a blurr.... Although I like really rocking songs... unless the DJ really knows how to mix different genre's... of hopping songs.... a non-stop banging beat can wear out my bones... including the ones in my ears. I love NEW music that I have never heard before.
We love you DJs!
